Dr Allina Pain Management

Prolotherapy

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy causes the proliferation, or growth, of new ligament tissue in areas where it has become stretched, torn, or otherwise weakened.

Ligaments and tendons are structures in the body that hold and support your joints. When the ligaments near a joint have not healed back to their original strength, the joint is not supported properly, and the result is usually chronic pain.  Prolotherapy uses a dextrose solution, which is injected into the ligament or tendon. The result is a localized inflammation which then increases the blood supply and stimulates the tissue to repair itself.

What types of problems can Prolotherapy treat?

Prolotherapy has consistently demonstrated its effectiveness in the treatment and cure of pain associated with:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Migraine and chronic headache
  • TMJ, neck pain, and whiplash
  • Shoulder, arm, and wrist pain
  • Carpal Tunnel and tennis elbow
  • Back and hip pain
  • Knee, ankle, and foot spurs
  • Heel spurs, arthritis, joint pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Loose tendons or ligament injury

Will Prolotherapy help me? How can I try it?

Pain Management

Pain can be a constant companion dragging you down mentally and physically. Fortunately, the Pain Management and Anti-Aging Center can offer treatment that, in many cases, relieves or otherwise eliminates your chronic pain.

Is my pain a problem?

If moving in certain ways, participating in activities you used to enjoy, or merely performing the everyday physical requirements of your job results in stabbing, debilitating pain, you can easily and quickly become a slave to your pain. Whether it comes at the moment of activity, or later on - perhaps during the night while in bed, or the next morning when you experience difficulty rising, this pain, your constant companion, now defines the boundaries of your life.

Many remedies are used to treat such pain, including rest, medication, traction, exercise, cortisone injections, physical therapy, and surgery. In many cases, however, these treatments fail and you must seek an alternate way of gaining immediate, lasting relief.

Is there a therapy that will actually work?

Fortunately, there is a proven solution, Prolotherapy, or Reconstructive Injection Therapy. The Pain Management and Anti-Aging Center specializes in Prolotherapy. You will learn more about this wonderful therapy in the next section. In addition to Prolotherapy, we cooperate with the primary care physician to provide you with a complete regimen of traditional and complementary medicines to treat "the whole patient." Therapies include:

  • Epidural injections for relief of low back pain
  • Regional nerve blocks for severe pain
  • Effective pain relief during injection procedures, including monitored IV sedation
  • Osteopathic Manipulation for pain relief
  • Massage Therapy
  • Neural Therapy

Anti-aging

Why should I consider creating an Anti-Aging program?

Many diseases, such as heart disease, arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, lung disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes are often preventable when their probable causes are corrected! In fact, as early as age 35, many adults begin to notice the effects of aging:

  • Decreased energy
  • Reduced strength
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Poor memory
  • Depression
  • Visual and hearing changes
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Increased body fat and weight gain
  • Hair loss and graying
  • Skin changes and wrinkles
  • General aches and pains

What exactly is involved in my Anti-Aging program?

At the Pain Management and Anti-Aging Center, you will participate in a personalized program that begins with a comprehensive history, evaluation, physical testing, and diagnostic screenings. After evaluation by Dr. Allina and his staff, your individual prescriptive program will be created. Anti-Aging is all about you. Research has shown that a healthy lifestyle, including Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, proper diet, exercise, and stress management will result in a youthful, healthier, happier you. Finally, your progress will be monitored, and appropriate follow-up will be provided as needed. Your quality of life is directly related to how you take care of yourself.

Our center is dedicated to:

  • Returning each individual to optimal health and vigor
  • Slowing the predictable aging process through Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, diet, and lifestyle changes
  • Preventing, reversing, or slowing the disease processes associated with aging and unhealthy lifestyle

What is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

The Pain Management and Anti-Aging Center is committed to assisting you in feeling your very best today and for the rest of your life. The center's state-of-the-art Anti-Aging Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy has been demonstrated to slow or even reverse many symptoms of the aging process.

Bio-Identical Hormone Management is about supplementing hormones that are identical to your own human hormones in amounts sufficient to maintain youthful vigor, energy, skin tone, libido, mental acuity, and good health. The goal is to return your hormone levels to the optimal levels of a healthy person in his or her early thirties - the age when your immune system is strongest and your metabolism most efficient. When Hormone Management returns your body to a younger hormonal state, you are better able to respond to optimal nutrition and exercise and you are able to live a healthier life... longer. Upon consulting Dr. Allina, he will determine whether this therapy will be appropriate for your individual Anti-Aging program.

How can I get started?

At the Pain Management and Anti-Aging Center, Dr. Allina evaluates each patient, and a plan is developed for your personal treatment. Contact our office to find out how you personally would benefit from an Anti-Aging program.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects approximately 10-20% of the general population. It is the most common disease diagnosed by gastroenterologists (doctors who specialize in medical treatment of disorders of the stomach and intestines). In fact, it is one of the most common disorders seen by all physicians. Often, when a person is diagnosed with IBS, the cause of the problem was not determined.

What causes IBS?

The most common cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic intestinal infection. This usually occurs after the use of antibiotics, which can destroy the healthy bacteria of the gut and allow harmful bacteria to flourish and chronically infect the gut. This harmful bacteria and yeast produce toxins that not only irritate the bowel, but in many cases spread throughout the body and cause other symptoms:

  • Muscle/Joint Pain
  • Diarrhea/Cramping/Constipation
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Heartburn
  • Weight Loss/Gain
  • Mental Fogginess/Poor Memory
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Blurred Vision
  • Chronic Urinary Tract Infection
  • Depression
  • Craving of Sweets
  • Bloating
  • Indigestion
  • Headaches
  • Food Intolerance
  • Blood in Stool
  • Thrush/Coated Tongue
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Ringing in the Ears

How can PMAC help?

The Pain Management and Anti-Aging Center has a program for the diagnosis, treatment, and correction of IBS. This program includes laboratory identification of the causes of IBS, a complete health history and assessment by Dr. Allina, medications to destroy the harmful organisms, re-colonization of the bowel with the right bacteria, necessary changes in diet, diet instruction, and routine screening for other contributing factors or IBS. This program corrects most cases of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

What can I do to help my condition?

People who eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly heal more quickly and enjoy better health. We encourage you to read the book A Week in the Zone by Dr. Barry Sears, and to keep a food diary. A food diary is helpful when changing your eating habits. Here are some tips:

  • Please STOP eating:sugars and starches such as cookies, cakes, candy, donuts, pasta, potatoes, fruit juice, and soda pop. Limit your intake of bread, rice, noodles, corn, cereal, diet soda, diet foods, crackers, and any diet sweeteners, as they promote IBS and Diabetes. Avoid processed foods and keep animal fats to a minimum.
  • Please eat: fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, low fat proteins (such as beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, shrimp, fish, and seafood), sweet acidophilus milk, yogurt, and buttermilk. Eggs, peanut butter, and oatmeal are okay, and pita bread is fine for sandwiches.
  • Please eat: both protein and complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds) each time you eat a meal or snack to keep your blood sugars normal.
  • Please eat frequently. Every two to four hours. Don't go hungry. The serving size of each food is the size of your own palm.
  • Please drink at least 8 glasses of water each day.

How can I make an appointment?

Just contact our office. If you have started a food diary, please bring it with you to your appointment.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a revolutionary new treatment that relieves pain by promoting long lasting healing of musculoskeletal conditions. This rapidly emerging technique is showing exciting potential with osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip and spine, rotator cuff tears, chronic plantar fasciitis, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, pelvic pain and instability, back and neck injuries, tennis elbow, ankle sprains, tendonitis, and ligament sprains. Dr. Allina has been trained in Platelet Rich Plasma injection therapy (PRP) and has taught this procedure to physicians around the country.  He has performed the procedure on hundreds of patients and can determine if this advanced, non-surgical treatment is right for you.

How does PRP therapy help?
The body’s first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelet cells in the blood to the injured site. Packed with growth factors and healing factors, platelets initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cells. PRP therapy’s natural healing process intensifies the body’s efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets to the site. To create PRP therapy, a small amount of your blood is drawn (similar to a lab test sample) and placed in a special machine called a centrifuge that spins the blood at high speeds, separating the platelets from the other components. The concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into and around the point of injury, jump-starting and significantly strengthening the body’s natural healing signal. Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of a transmissible infection and a very low risk of allergic reaction.

How long does it take?
The procedure takes approximately one hour, including preparation and recovery time. Performed safely in our office, PRP therapy relieves pain without the risks of surgery, general anesthesia, or hospital stays and without a prolonged recovery. In fact, most people return to their jobs or usual activities soon after the procedure.

How often should this procedure be done?
The majority of patients only required one treatment to reach their goal of 85% to 100% pain relief.   The remainder required one or two more treatments spaced six to eight weeks later. You may, however, gain considerable to complete relief after the first or second injection.

What are the expected results?
Because the goal of PRP therapy is to resolve pain through healing, it could prove to have lasting results. Initial improvement may be seen within a few weeks, gradually increasing as the healing progresses. Research studies and clinical practice have shown PRP therapy to be very effective at relieving pain and returning patients to their normal lives. Both ultrasound and MRI images have shown definitive tissue repair after PRP therapy, confirming the healing process. The need for surgery can also be greatly reduced by treating injured tissues before the damage progresses and the condition is irreversible.

Make your appointment to see if you are a candidate for this exciting new procedure!  Take the next step to stop your pain and start living again.
